It’s no secret that technology has immensely improved our day-to-day lives, but for the traveler of means it has become essential. According to the 2013 Portrait of Digital Travelers™, recently released by MMGY Global/Harrison Group, today’s “Digital Elite” have a whole new standard when it comes to their approach to travel. These tech-savvy individuals are defined as those who own and use at least two digital devices to book travel services and all indications suggest they represent the future of travelers.

From online booking to mobile check-in, tablets and smartphones have improved the entire travel process, which is why it’s not all that surprising that this group has seen a dramatic increase from five percent of all travelers in 2011 to 33% today. Tablet usage in general has skyrocketed among travelers as a way to access the internet during this time period, jumping from seven to almost 50%.
Whether it’s an extended international vacation or just a weekend trip, the Digital Elite are more likely to travel and spend more money while doing so. The study includes insights into their shopping habits, social media usage and more. Additionally, a greater number describes themselves as happy, healthy, confident and fun compared to less-connected travelers.
